Sarah B. Smith, J.D., LL.M.

Counsel and Associate Trust Officer

My Role at Covenant

I joined First Covenant in 2023. As Counsel & Associate Trust Officer, I review legal documents related to incoming trusts and focus on providing high-quality services to clients. I enjoy building lasting relationships with clients, and their legal, financial, and other advisors to provide family-oriented and personal services to each family I serve.

Family is my passion and being able to come alongside families as they navigate and plan for the ups and downs in life is one of my favorite things to do.

Education and Experience

I graduated from Samford University with a B.A. in psychology. I received a J.D. from Capital University Law School, where I graduated summa cum laude, followed by my LL.M. in Taxation from Georgetown University Law Center.  I am licensed to practice law in Tennessee.

Prior to joining First Covenant, I gained legal experience with one of Knoxville’s largest and most well-respected law firms and in my solo practice. My legal practice included estate planning, probate, business formations, corporate law, and tax planning.  My experience as a drafting and transactional attorney allows me to guide families through the trust administration process and communicate effectively when families face complex planning or administration issues.

Community Involvement and Personal Notes

I grew up in Johnson City but moved away about 15 years ago. I was happy to bring my family back to the area and to join First Covenant in the Fall of 2023. I am enjoying being back home and relearning the area. We attend, and are in the process of becoming members, at Red Stone Church in Johnson City. My husband and I have three daughters, one in heaven, and two who consume most of our free time. I enjoy hiking, traveling, reading, and pretty much any excuse to be outside in nature.
